Publius the Ascetic

Venerable Publius of Syria, founder of a monastery near Zeugma.

St. Publius was a senator's son of Zeugma on the Euphrates in the fourth century who sold his goods for the poor and founded a monastic community on a hill near the city, gathering both Greek- and Syriac-speaking monks.

He reposed in peace and is commemorated on January 25.

On the New Calendar, Publius the Ascetic is commemorated on January 25. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on February 7 of the civil calendar.
