Hieromartyr Vladimir, Metropolitan of Kiev, first of the Russian New Martyrs.
January 25
St. Vladimir was Metropolitan of Kiev and had earlier served as Metropolitan of Moscow and of St. Petersburg. In January 1918 he was seized by armed men at the Kiev Caves Lavra, led outside its walls, and shot, becoming the first bishop to suffer under the Bolsheviks.
He is commemorated on January 25 and with the New Martyrs of Russia.
July 15
St. Vladimir, Equal-to-the-Apostles, was Great Prince of Kiev in the tenth century. Raised in paganism, he sought out the true faith, and after his envoys beheld the divine services in Constantinople he received holy baptism and in 988 led his people to the waters of the Dnieper, the baptism of Rus.
From a harsh ruler he became a father to his people, building churches, feeding the poor, and softening the laws. Through him the Orthodox faith took root in the lands of Rus. He reposed in 1015 and is commemorated on July 15.
