Venerable Silouan the Athonite, monk of St. Panteleimon Monastery and teacher of prayer for the whole world.
St. Silouan was born a Russian peasant in 1866 and came to the monastery of St. Panteleimon on Mount Athos as a young man, where he lived for nearly fifty years in obedience and prayer. He was granted a vision of the living Christ and taught, from long struggle with despair, the word he received: keep thy mind in hell and despair not.
His writings, gathered by his disciple Archimandrite Sophrony, have made him one of the most beloved saints of the modern Church. He reposed in 1938 and is commemorated on September 24.
