Symeon Metaphrastes

Venerable Symeon Metaphrastes, compiler of the lives of the saints.

Saint Symeon Metaphrastes was a high official at the Byzantine court in the tenth century and a man of great learning. He is remembered above all for compiling and rewriting the lives of the saints in the great collection known as the Menologion.

He also composed hymns and prayers still used in the Church, and reposed in peace.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Symeon Metaphrastes is commemorated on November 9. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 22 of the civil calendar.
