Holy Martyr Varus and the six monk-martyrs of Egypt who suffered with him.
Varus was a Roman officer in Egypt and a secret Christian who visited and cared for imprisoned confessors. When one of seven imprisoned monks died before trial, Varus took his place, declaring himself a Christian.
He was tortured and beheaded with the others around 307, and his relics were taken to Palestine by the blessed Cleopatra.
Feast day
On the New Calendar, Varus and the Six Monk-Martyrs is commemorated on October 19. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 1 of the civil calendar.
