  Onuphrios the Great

  Venerable, Ονούφριος

  St. Onuphrios the Great was one of the greatest hermits of the Egyptian desert, living in the fourth century. Leaving his monastery for the inner wilderness, he dwelt alone for some sixty years in utter poverty, unseen by men, clothed only in his own hair and a girdle of leaves, sustained by God in prayer.

• Peter the Athonite

  Venerable, Πέτρος ο Αθωνίτης

  Saint Peter was a Byzantine soldier taken captive by the Arabs who, tradition relates, was freed through the prayers of Saint Nicholas and vowed to become a monk. Directed by a vision of the Theotokos, he went to Mount Athos in the ninth century and lived there in a cave for many decades in complete solitude.

• Antonina of Nicaea

  Holy Woman, Αντωνίνα

  Saint Antonina was a Christian virgin of Nicaea in Bithynia who confessed Christ before the governor during the persecution of Diocletian. Tradition relates that she endured many tortures and was finally drowned, sewn into a sack and cast into a lake.

• Arsenius of Konevets

  Venerable, Αρσένιος Κονεζίας

  Saint Arsenius was a coppersmith of Novgorod who became a monk and spent three years on Mount Athos. Returning with an icon of the Theotokos, he founded a monastery on the island of Konevets in Lake Ladoga in the late fourteenth century and reposed there in 1447.

• Synesios, Benedict and Timothy, Monk-Martyrs of Thessaloniki

  Martyr, Συνέσιος, Βενέδικτος και Τιμόθεος

  The synaxaria of Thessaloniki commemorate the monks Synesios, Benedict and Timothy as New Martyrs who were put to death in that city during the Turkish period for their confession of Christ. Together with the monk Paul of Ioannina they are honoured on this day.
