• Bartholomew and Barnabas the Apostles

  Apostle, Βαρθολομαίος και Βαρνάβας

  Saint Bartholomew, one of the Twelve, is generally identified with Nathanael of Cana. Tradition relates that he preached in Arabia, India and Armenia, where he was flayed and crucified for Christ.

• Luke of Simferopol, the Surgeon

  Hierarch, Λουκάς ο Ιατρός

  Saint Luke, born Valentin Voino-Yasenetsky in 1877, was a distinguished surgeon and professor of medicine who was ordained priest and then bishop during the Soviet persecution. He spent eleven years in prisons and exile, yet continued to operate on the sick and to write, and was awarded for his surgical work during the war.

• Metrophanes of China and the Martyrs of the Boxer Rebellion

  Hierarch, Μητροφάνης Τσι-Σουνγκ

  Saint Metrophanes was the first Chinese priest of the Russian mission in Peking. During the Boxer Rebellion in June 1900 he and his family, together with more than two hundred Orthodox Chinese, were killed for refusing to renounce Christ.

• Barnabas of Vasa, the Wonderworker

  Venerable, Βαρνάβας ο εν Λεμεσώ

  Saint Barnabas lived the ascetic life in the region of Vasa near Limassol in Cyprus and is honoured there as a wonderworker. His memory is kept on the feast of the Apostle Barnabas, and a church in his name marks the place of his struggles.

• Zapheirios the New Martyr

  Martyr, Ζαφείριος

  Saint Zapheirios is commemorated in the Greek synaxaria as a New Martyr who gave his life for Christ during the years of Ottoman rule. Few details of his life have been preserved, but Greeks named Zafeiris and Zafeiria keep their name day on this feast.
