Hieromartyr Metrophanes Chi-Sung, first Chinese Orthodox priest, with his wife Tatiana and the 222 martyrs of Peking in 1900.
Saint Metrophanes was the first Chinese priest of the Russian mission in Peking. During the Boxer Rebellion in June 1900 he and his family, together with more than two hundred Orthodox Chinese, were killed for refusing to renounce Christ.
His wife Tatiana, his sons Isaiah and John and the catechist Paul Wang are commemorated with him. They were glorified in 1902 and are honoured as the first martyrs of the Chinese Church.
Feast day
On the New Calendar, Metrophanes of China and the Martyrs of the Boxer Rebellion is commemorated on June 11. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 24 of the civil calendar.
