Saint Luke, Archbishop of Simferopol and Crimea, surgeon, confessor and wonderworker of the twentieth century.
Saint Luke, born Valentin Voino-Yasenetsky in 1877, was a distinguished surgeon and professor of medicine who was ordained priest and then bishop during the Soviet persecution. He spent eleven years in prisons and exile, yet continued to operate on the sick and to write, and was awarded for his surgical work during the war.
As archbishop of Simferopol he served until his repose in 1961. Glorified in 1996, he is greatly loved in Greece, where his relics and countless healings have made him one of the most venerated saints of our time.

On the New Calendar, Luke of Simferopol, the Surgeon is commemorated on June 11. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 24 of the civil calendar.
