  Timothy and Maura

  Martyr, Τιμόθεος και Μαύρα

  The Holy Martyrs Timothy and Maura were a young Christian couple of Egypt who suffered during the persecution of Diocletian at the end of the third century. Timothy was a reader of the Church, entrusted with the sacred books; only days after their marriage the two were arrested when he refused to surrender them. Together they endured cruel tortures and were crucified, encouraging one another in the faith to the end.

  Peter of Argos

  Hierarch, Πέτρος Άργους

  St. Peter, Bishop of Argos, was a monk of deep humility who lived in the ninth and tenth centuries. Long refusing episcopal office, he was at last persuaded to shepherd the Church of Argos in the Peloponnese, where he became a father to his flock, feeding the hungry in time of famine, ransoming captives, and caring for orphans and the poor.

  Holy Woman, Ξενία η Μεγαλομάρτυς

  Xenia was born in the late third century in the region of Kalamata to Christian parents of Italian origin. When she refused the advances of the local governor and would not sacrifice to idols, she was subjected to cruel tortures and finally beheaded.

• Theodosius of the Kiev Caves

  Venerable, Θεοδόσιος των Σπηλαίων του Κιέβου

  Theodosius was born near Kiev in the eleventh century and, against his mother's wishes, sought out Saint Anthony in his cave above the Dnieper. He became the second abbot of the community and gave it the coenobitic rule of the Studion, building the first great monastery of Rus.

  Oikoumenios was bishop of Trikka (modern Trikala) in Thessaly, traditionally placed around the tenth century. He was a learned interpreter of Scripture, and commentaries on the Apocalypse and the Epistles have circulated under his name.

  Martyr, Διόδωρος και Ροδοπιανός

  Diodoros and the deacon Rhodopianos preached Christ in the city of Aphrodisias in Caria during the persecution of Diocletian. Seized by the pagans of the city, they were stoned to death for their confession.

• Theophanes of Peritheorion

  Hierarch, Θεοφάνης Περιθεωρίου

  Theophanes was a monk of the Great Lavra on Mount Athos, where he was formed in the hesychast tradition. In the fourteenth century he was chosen Metropolitan of Peritheorion in Thrace and served his flock with pastoral care during troubled times.
