  John the Merciful

  Hierarch, Ιωάννης ο Ελεήμων

  St. John the Merciful, a native of Cyprus, became Patriarch of Alexandria in the early seventh century. He earned his title by boundless almsgiving: he called the poor his masters, kept a register of the needy of the city, and poured out the wealth of the Church in feeding, clothing, and ransoming all who came to him, trusting that God would never be outgiven.

• Nilus of Sinai

  Venerable, Νείλος ο Ασκητής

  Saint Nilus was a high official in Constantinople and a disciple of Saint John Chrysostom. By agreement with his wife he left the world and settled with his son Theodoulos on Mount Sinai, where he lived as an ascetic.

• Nilus the Myrrhgusher

  Venerable, Νείλος ο Μυροβλύτης

  Saint Nilus was born in the Peloponnese in the seventeenth century and became a monk on Mount Athos, living in a cave near the Great Lavra in strict asceticism. After his repose in 1651 fragrant myrrh flowed from his relics, from which he takes his name.

• Martin of Tours

  Hierarch, Μαρτίνος ο Ελεήμων

  Saint Martin was born in Pannonia in the fourth century and served in the Roman army. The famous story relates that as a catechumen he cut his cloak in half to clothe a freezing beggar, and that night saw Christ wearing the piece he had given away.

• Ahijah the Prophet

  Prophet, Αχιά ο Προφήτης

  The Prophet Ahijah of Shiloh lived in the days of King Solomon and his son Rehoboam. As recorded in the Books of Kings, he foretold to Jeroboam that he would rule over ten tribes of Israel, and later prophesied the downfall of Jeroboam's house for its idolatry.

  Martyr, Σάββας Νιγδελής ο Νεομάρτυς

  Saint Sabbas was born at Nigde in Cappadocia and earned his living as a tradesman in Constantinople. Tradition relates that after a dispute he was falsely accused before the Ottoman authorities and pressed to convert to Islam.

  Martyr, Ζεβινάς, Γερμανός, Νικηφόρος και Αντωνίνος

  The holy martyrs Zebinas, Germanos, Nikephoros and Antoninus suffered at Caesarea in Palestine under Maximian. They presented themselves before the governor and openly confessed Christ, and were beheaded.
