  Catherine the Great Martyr

  Martyr, Αικατερίνη η Μεγαλομάρτυς

  St. Catherine the Great Martyr was a noble and brilliantly educated maiden of Alexandria, martyred at the beginning of the fourth century. According to tradition, she confessed Christ before the emperor and bested in debate the philosophers gathered to refute her, leading many to the faith. After torture on the wheel, which was broken by grace, she was beheaded.

• Mercurius the Great Martyr

  Saint Mercurius was a Scythian officer in the Roman army who, according to tradition, was granted victory in battle by an angel and afterwards confessed Christ before the Emperor Decius. He was subjected to cruel tortures and beheaded at Caesarea in Cappadocia.

  Saint Augusta was the wife of the emperor Maxentius. Tradition relates that she visited Saint Catherine in prison, was converted by her and confessed Christ before her husband.

  Saint Porphyrios was a general of the emperor Maxentius who, together with two hundred soldiers, believed in Christ through the witness of Saint Catherine and the Empress Augusta.

  Tradition relates that the emperor Maxentius summoned the most learned philosophers of the empire to dispute with Saint Catherine. Defeated by her wisdom, they confessed Christ.
