  Clement of Rome

  Hierarch, Κλήμης Ρώμης

  St. Clement was Bishop of Rome at the end of the first century, a man of the apostolic generation whom tradition associates with the companions of the Apostles Peter and Paul. His epistle to the Corinthians, written to heal division in that church, is among the most precious writings of the early Church. Exiled for the faith to the region of the Crimea, he labored among the faithful there and was martyred by drowning.

• Peter of Alexandria

  Hierarch, Πέτρος Αλεξανδρείας

  Saint Peter became Archbishop of Alexandria in 300 and guided the Church through the persecution of Diocletian and his successors. He opposed the schism of Meletius and the early errors of Arius, whom he excommunicated.

• Hermogenes of Agrigentum

  Hierarch, Ερμογένης Ακραγαντίνων

  Saint Hermogenes was Bishop of Agrigentum in Sicily. The synaxarion records that he governed his flock with wisdom and reposed in peace.

• Malchus the Venerable

  Venerable, Μάλχος ο Όσιος

  Venerable Malchus is honoured in the synaxarion as a monk who reposed in peace. Tradition identifies him with the Syrian monk whose story of captivity among the desert nomads and faithful return to his monastery was recorded by Saint Jerome.

• Karion the Venerable

  Venerable, Καρίων ο Όσιος

  Venerable Karion was a monk of Scetis in Egypt and the father of Venerable Zacharias, who followed him into the desert as a boy. The Evergetinos preserves his saying that a man who keeps a child with him in the desert cannot advance to the higher measures of virtue.

• Mercurius of Smolensk

  Martyr, Μερκούριος ο εν Σμολένσκη

  Saint Mercurius was a soldier of Smolensk in the thirteenth century. Tradition relates that the Theotokos appeared to him and sent him against the Tatar army approaching the city; he slew their champion and put them to flight, but was himself beheaded.

• Chrysogonos the Martyr

  Martyr, Χρυσόγονος

  Saint Chrysogonos was a Christian of Rome and the spiritual teacher of the Great Martyr Anastasia. Imprisoned under Diocletian, he strengthened her by his letters.
