Clement of Rome

Pope Clement I of Rome, martyr.

St. Clement was Bishop of Rome at the end of the first century, a man of the apostolic generation whom tradition associates with the companions of the Apostles Peter and Paul. His epistle to the Corinthians, written to heal division in that church, is among the most precious writings of the early Church. Exiled for the faith to the region of the Crimea, he labored among the faithful there and was martyred by drowning.

The Church honors him as an apostolic father and hieromartyr whose words still teach concord and humility. He is commemorated on November 24.
