Peter of Alexandria

Hieromartyr Peter, Archbishop of Alexandria, the last martyr of the great persecution.

Saint Peter became Archbishop of Alexandria in 300 and guided the Church through the persecution of Diocletian and his successors. He opposed the schism of Meletius and the early errors of Arius, whom he excommunicated.

Tradition relates that he was beheaded in 311 by order of Maximinus, and that before his death he saw Christ in a vision with His garment torn, a sign of the coming Arian division.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Peter of Alexandria is commemorated on November 24. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on December 7 of the civil calendar.
