Mercurius of Smolensk

Holy Martyr Mercurius of Smolensk, who died defending the city from the Tatars.

Saint Mercurius was a soldier of Smolensk in the thirteenth century. Tradition relates that the Theotokos appeared to him and sent him against the Tatar army approaching the city; he slew their champion and put them to flight, but was himself beheaded.

He is venerated as the protector of Smolensk.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Mercurius of Smolensk is commemorated on November 24. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on December 7 of the civil calendar.
