  Zacharias the Prophet

  Prophet, Ζαχαρίας

  The holy Prophet Zacharias was a priest of the Temple in Jerusalem and the father of St. John the Baptist. The Archangel Gabriel announced to him at the altar of incense that his wife Elizabeth, barren and advanced in years, would bear a son; and at the child's birth Zacharias prophesied concerning the coming salvation of Israel.

• Elizabeth the Righteous, Mother of the Forerunner

  Holy Woman, Ελισάβετ

  The righteous Elizabeth was of the daughters of Aaron and the wife of the priest Zacharias; the Gospel of Luke calls them both righteous before God. Barren and advanced in years, she conceived St. John the Forerunner by the promise of the Archangel Gabriel, and when the Virgin Mary came to visit her she was filled with the Holy Spirit and greeted her as the Mother of her Lord.

• Abdaios of Persia

  Hierarch, Αβδαίος

  St. Abdaios was a bishop in Persia in the fifth century, under King Yazdegerd. Refusing to worship the sun and fire as the Persians demanded, he was beaten with thorny rods and died of his wounds, giving thanks to God.

• Medimnos, Urban, Theodore and the 77 with them

  Martyr, Μέδιμνος, Ουρβανός, Θεόδωρος

  The holy martyrs Medimnos, Urban and Theodore, with some eighty priests and deacons of Constantinople, went to the Arian emperor Valens to plead for the Orthodox who were being persecuted. The emperor ordered them put aboard a ship, which was set on fire at sea, and all perished in the flames near Nicomedia.

• Athanasius of Brest

  Hierarch, Αθανάσιος του Μπρεστ

  St. Athanasius was a learned monk and abbot of the monastery of St. Simeon at Brest in the seventeenth century, when the Orthodox of Lithuania and Poland were under pressure to accept the Union with Rome. He defended the Orthodox faith fearlessly before the Polish authorities and endured repeated imprisonment.
