  Miracle of Archangel Michael at Chonae

  Great Feast, Μιχαήλ Χωνών

  This feast commemorates the miracle wrought by the Archangel Michael at Chonae in Asia Minor. According to tradition, pagans sought to destroy a church and healing spring dedicated to the Archangel by turning rivers against it; at the prayer of the devout sacristan Archippos, the Archangel appeared, struck the rock with his staff, and channeled the waters harmlessly into a chasm, preserving the holy place.

  St. Eudoxios was a military commander of Melitene in Armenia in the time of the persecutions of Diocletian and his successors. When he declared himself a Christian, tradition relates that more than a thousand soldiers under him laid down their arms and confessed with him, and were put to death together. Eudoxios, with his friends Zeno and Makarios, was beheaded.

  St. Kalodoti was a Christian woman of Alexandria who suffered martyrdom in the persecution of Decius in the third century, together with the priest Faustus, the deacon Abibas and their companions.

  The holy martyrs Faustus the presbyter, Abibas the deacon, Kyriakos, Dionysios, Andrew, Theoktistos the ship captain, Sarapabon the senator and their companions confessed Christ at Alexandria in the persecution of Decius. Brought before the governor Valerius, they refused to sacrifice and were put to death by various torments.

• Archippos of Chonae

  St. Archippos came as a boy to serve at the church of the Archangel Michael at Chonae in Phrygia, where a healing spring flowed, and lived there for many decades in fasting and prayer. When pagans diverted two rivers to sweep away the church, he prayed without ceasing, and the Archangel appeared and split the rock so that the waters were swallowed up.

• Lygeri the New Martyr of Chios

  Holy Woman, Λυγερή

  St. Lygeri was a young Christian woman of Chios in the Ottoman period. Tradition relates that, pursued by a Turk who sought to make her his wife and change her faith, she refused steadfastly and was put to death for her confession of Christ.
