  The righteous Simeon the God-Receiver was the elder to whom it was revealed by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord. When the infant Jesus was brought to the Temple forty days after His birth, Simeon received Him into his arms and blessed God with the prayer sung at every Vespers: Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace.

  Simeon, Bishop of Jerusalem

  St. Simeon was a kinsman of the Lord according to the flesh, the son of Clopas, and became the second Bishop of Jerusalem after the death of James the Brother of God. He shepherded the mother Church of Jerusalem through decades of trial, including the destruction of the city, guarding the flock of Christ in the very places of His Passion and Resurrection.

  Simeon Stylites the Elder

  September 1, Venerable, Συμεών Στυλίτης

  St. Simeon Stylites the Elder was a Syrian ascetic of the fifth century who, seeking greater stillness, took up his dwelling on top of a pillar near Antioch. There he stood for many years in prayer and fasting, teaching the crowds who gathered below and reconciling enemies, until his repose in the year 459.
