Forty days after His Nativity, the infant Christ was brought to the Temple in Jerusalem by the Theotokos and the righteous Joseph, in fulfillment of the Law of Moses. There He was received into the arms of the Elder Simeon, to whom it had been revealed that he would not die before seeing the Messiah, and Simeon blessed God with the prayer now sung at every Vespers. The aged Prophetess Anna likewise gave thanks and spoke of the Child to all who awaited redemption.
Simeon the God-Receiver
February 3, Venerable, Συμεών
The righteous Simeon the God-Receiver was the elder to whom it was revealed by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord. When the infant Jesus was brought to the Temple forty days after His birth, Simeon received Him into his arms and blessed God with the prayer sung at every Vespers: Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace.
Simeon Stylites the Younger
April 24, Venerable, Συμεών ο Νέος
St. Simeon Stylites the Younger was born in Antioch in the sixth century. Drawn to asceticism from early childhood, he took up the extraordinary struggle of the pillar-dwellers, living for the greater part of his long life atop a column on the mountain near Antioch called the Wonderful Mountain, in unceasing prayer and fasting.
