  Forty days after His Nativity, the infant Christ was brought to the Temple in Jerusalem by the Theotokos and the righteous Joseph, in fulfillment of the Law of Moses. There He was received into the arms of the Elder Simeon, to whom it had been revealed that he would not die before seeing the Messiah, and Simeon blessed God with the prayer now sung at every Vespers. The aged Prophetess Anna likewise gave thanks and spoke of the Child to all who awaited redemption.

• Jordan of Trebizond

  Martyr, Ιορδάνης

  St. Jordan came from Trebizond in Pontus and settled with his family in Galata in Constantinople. When a Muslim companion mocked St. Nicholas, Jordan answered with a bold word in defence of the saint and was denounced for insulting Islam.

• Gabriel of Prokonnesos

  Martyr, Γαβριήλ ο Οσιομάρτυς

  St. Gabriel came from Alone on the island of Prokonnesos. He became a monk and served as a preacher in Constantinople. Accused of insulting the Muslim religion, he was imprisoned and tortured.

• Agathodoros the Martyr

  Martyr, Αγαθόδωρος

  St. Agathodoros is commemorated among the martyrs of the early Church. The Synaxaria relate only that he confessed Christ and was slain, receiving the crown of martyrdom.
