Akepsimas the Hermit

Venerable Akepsimas, hermit of Cyrrhus in Syria who lived enclosed in a cell for sixty years.

Venerable Akepsimas was a hermit of the region of Cyrrhus in Syria in the fourth century. Tradition relates that he shut himself in a small cell for some sixty years, receiving food through a narrow opening and speaking with no one.

Shortly before his death he was persuaded to accept ordination to the priesthood and reposed in peace soon afterwards. He is distinct from the hieromartyr Akepsimas of Persia commemorated on the same day.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Akepsimas the Hermit is commemorated on November 3. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 16 of the civil calendar.
