George the New Hieromartyr of Neapolis

Holy New Hieromartyr George, priest of Neapolis in Cappadocia, martyred in 1797.

Saint George was a married priest of Neapolis in Cappadocia, the present Nevsehir, in the eighteenth century. He was known for his pastoral zeal among the Greek Christians of the region.

Tradition relates that he was denounced to the Ottoman authorities, refused to renounce his faith and was beheaded in 1797. His relics were venerated locally until the population exchange, when they were brought to Greece.

On the New Calendar, George the New Hieromartyr of Neapolis is commemorated on November 3. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 16 of the civil calendar.
