Alonius the Venerable

Venerable Alonius of Egypt, a desert father whose sayings are preserved in the Apophthegmata.

Abba Alonius was one of the Egyptian desert fathers of the fourth and fifth centuries. Several of his sayings survive in the Sayings of the Desert Fathers, including his teaching that a man cannot be at peace until he says in his heart that only he and God are in the world.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Alonius the Venerable is commemorated on June 4. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 17 of the civil calendar.
