Sophia of Ainos

Venerable Sophia of Ainos in Thrace, a mother of six who became an ascetic and mother to orphans.

Saint Sophia lived in Ainos in Thrace and was the mother of six children. After she was widowed and her children died, she devoted herself to prayer and to the care of orphans and the poor, becoming a mother to many. Tradition relates that she lived in great simplicity and reposed in peace in the tenth century.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Sophia of Ainos is commemorated on June 4. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 17 of the civil calendar.
