Anastasios Gordios

Venerable Anastasios Gordios of Vraniana in Agrapha, priest-monk and teacher of the enslaved Greek nation.

Saint Anastasios Gordios was born in the village of Vraniana in the Agrapha mountains in 1654 and studied under Eugenios Giannoulis. He became a priest-monk and spent his life teaching, writing and guiding the people of the mountains during the Ottoman period.

He reposed in 1729 and was numbered among the saints by the Ecumenical Patriarchate. He is honoured as one of the teachers who kept faith and letters alive among the Greeks.

On the New Calendar, Anastasios Gordios is commemorated on June 7. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 20 of the civil calendar.
