Panagis Basias of Kefalonia

Venerable Panagis (Paisios) Basias of Lixouri, Kefalonia, priest and fool for Christ of the nineteenth century.

Saint Panagis Basias was born in Lixouri on Kefalonia in 1801, received a good education and became a priest and teacher. He gave himself to the poor and to prayer, and in his later years took upon himself the foolishness for Christ, through which he was granted gifts of discernment and healing.

He reposed in 1888 and was glorified by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 1986. He is greatly loved on Kefalonia, where many bear his name.

On the New Calendar, Panagis Basias of Kefalonia is commemorated on June 7. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 20 of the civil calendar.
