Potamiaena of Alexandria and Basilides

Holy Virgin Martyr Potamiaena of Alexandria, and the soldier Basilides who was converted by her.

Saint Potamiaena was a Christian slave of Alexandria of great beauty and purity. Refusing her master's advances and denounced as a Christian, she was tortured and, tradition relates, slowly lowered into boiling pitch in the early third century.

The soldier Basilides who led her to execution treated her with kindness; she promised to pray for him, and shortly afterwards he confessed Christ and was beheaded. Their story is told by Eusebius.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Potamiaena of Alexandria and Basilides is commemorated on June 7. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 20 of the civil calendar.
