Anianus of Alexandria

Saint Anianus, second Bishop of Alexandria, converted by the Apostle Mark.

Anianus was a cobbler of Alexandria who, tradition relates, wounded his hand while mending the sandal of the Apostle Mark and was healed by him, whereupon he and his household believed in Christ.

Mark ordained him bishop, and after the apostle's martyrdom he governed the Church of Alexandria until his own repose in the first century.

On the New Calendar, Anianus of Alexandria is commemorated on April 25. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 8 of the civil calendar.
