Basil of Poiana Marului

Venerable Basil of Poiana Marului, Romanian elder and teacher of the prayer of the heart.

Basil was a monk who settled in the mountains of Wallachia in the eighteenth century and founded the hermitage of Poiana Marului, gathering a community devoted to inner prayer and the study of the fathers.

He was the spiritual father of Saint Paisius Velichkovsky and wrote introductions to the works of the hesychast fathers. He reposed in 1767.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Basil of Poiana Marului is commemorated on April 25. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 8 of the civil calendar.
