  Mark the Evangelist

  Apostle, Μάρκος ο Ευαγγελιστής

  St. Mark the Evangelist, one of the Seventy, was a companion of the Apostles Peter and Paul, and wrote the second Gospel, which ancient tradition holds preserves the preaching of Peter. He labored in the spread of the Gospel from Jerusalem to Rome, and is honored as the founder of the Church of Alexandria in Egypt.

• Macedonius II of Constantinople

  Hierarch, Μακεδόνιος Β' Πατριάρχης

  Macedonius was Patriarch of Constantinople at the end of the fifth century, a man of ascetic life and firm Orthodoxy. When the emperor Anastasius pressed him to reject the Council of Chalcedon he refused.

• Anianus of Alexandria

  Hierarch, Αννιανός Αλεξανδρείας

  Anianus was a cobbler of Alexandria who, tradition relates, wounded his hand while mending the sandal of the Apostle Mark and was healed by him, whereupon he and his household believed in Christ.

• Sylvester of Obnora

  Venerable, Σιλβέστρος της Όμπνορα

  Sylvester was a disciple of Saint Sergius of Radonezh who withdrew to the forests by the river Obnora in northern Russia in the fourteenth century. Disciples gathered around him and a monastery of the Resurrection was founded there.

• Basil of Poiana Marului

  Venerable, Βασίλειος ο Ησυχαστής

  Basil was a monk who settled in the mountains of Wallachia in the eighteenth century and founded the hermitage of Poiana Marului, gathering a community devoted to inner prayer and the study of the fathers.
