  Basil of Amaseia

  Hierarch, Βασίλειος

  St. Basil was Bishop of Amaseia in Pontus in the early fourth century, in the last days of the persecutions. A fearless shepherd who protected those who fled to the Church for refuge, he drew upon himself the anger of the emperor Licinius, and was put to death for his faithfulness, his body cast into the sea.

• Glaphyra the Virgin

  Holy Woman, Γλαφυρά

  Glaphyra was a maidservant of the empress Constantia, wife of Licinius. When the emperor sought to seduce her, the empress helped her flee in disguise to Amaseia, where Bishop Basil received her and she gave money to build a church.

  Stephen was born in Ustyug in the fourteenth century and became a monk in Rostov, where he learned Greek and the language of the pagan Zyrians of the north. Going among them as a missionary, he created an alphabet for their tongue and translated the services.

  Leo is commemorated in the Greek synaxaria as a holy bishop of the island of Samos who shepherded his flock in piety and reposed in peace. The details of his life have not been preserved.

• Tamara the Queen

  Holy Woman, Ταμάρα η Βασίλισσα

  Tamara reigned over Georgia from 1184 to 1213, a time of peace, learning and church-building remembered as the golden age of the kingdom. She was renowned for her piety, her justice and her generosity to monasteries and the poor.
