Saint Stephen, Bishop of Perm, enlightener of the Zyrian people.
Stephen was born in Ustyug in the fourteenth century and became a monk in Rostov, where he learned Greek and the language of the pagan Zyrians of the north. Going among them as a missionary, he created an alphabet for their tongue and translated the services.
He was made first Bishop of Perm, built churches and schools, and reposed in Moscow in 1396.

On the New Calendar, Stephen of Perm is commemorated on April 26. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 9 of the civil calendar.
