Anthony the Roman of Novgorod

Venerable Anthony the Roman, wonderworker and founder of a monastery at Novgorod.

Saint Anthony was born in Rome to Orthodox parents and became a monk. Tradition relates that he was miraculously carried across the sea to Novgorod, where he founded a monastery dedicated to the Nativity of the Theotokos.

He reposed in the twelfth century and is honoured as one of the great ascetics of the Russian north.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Anthony the Roman of Novgorod is commemorated on August 3. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on August 16 of the civil calendar.
