Augustine of Hippo

Saint Augustine, Bishop of Hippo in North Africa, great teacher of the Western Church.

Saint Augustine was born in Tagaste in North Africa in 354 to the pious Monica. After years of wandering in error he was converted through the preaching of Saint Ambrose and was baptised in Milan in 387. He became bishop of Hippo and wrote the Confessions, the City of God and many other works.

He reposed in 430 during the siege of his city by the Vandals. Greek men named Avgoustinos keep their name day on this feast.
