Venerable Jerome of Stridon, ascetic of Bethlehem and translator of the Scriptures.
Saint Jerome was born in Stridon in Dalmatia around 347 and studied in Rome. After years of asceticism in the Syrian desert he settled in Bethlehem, where he lived in a monastery near the cave of the Nativity and produced his Latin translation of the Scriptures and many commentaries.
He reposed in 420. Greek men named Ieronymos keep their name day on this feast.
