Savvas of Vatopedi, Fool for Christ

Venerable Savvas of Vatopedi, the fool for Christ, ascetic of Mount Athos and the Holy Land.

Saint Savvas was born in Thessaloniki in the late thirteenth century and became a monk of Vatopedi on Mount Athos. He travelled to the Holy Land and lived for many years as a fool for Christ, keeping silence for two decades, before returning to Athos.

He was a counsellor of emperors and patriarchs yet refused the patriarchal throne. His life was written by his disciple Saint Philotheos Kokkinos. He reposed around 1349.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Savvas of Vatopedi, Fool for Christ is commemorated on June 15. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 28 of the civil calendar.
