Jonah, Metropolitan of Moscow

Saint Jonah, Metropolitan of Moscow and all Russia, wonderworker.

Saint Jonah was born near Galich and entered the monastic life at twelve. He became bishop of Ryazan and in 1448 was chosen metropolitan of Moscow, the first to be installed by the Russian bishops themselves. He was known for his defence of Orthodoxy and for miracles of healing, and reposed in 1461.

On the New Calendar, Jonah, Metropolitan of Moscow is commemorated on June 15. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 28 of the civil calendar.
