  Amos the Prophet

  Prophet, Αμώς

  The Holy Prophet Amos was a shepherd and dresser of sycamore trees from Tekoa, called by God in the eighth century before Christ to prophesy to the northern kingdom of Israel. A plain man with no schooling of the prophets, he spoke fearlessly against the injustice of the rich and the emptiness of worship without righteousness, declaring the word of the Lord: let justice roll down like waters.

• Jerome of Stridon

  Venerable, Ιερώνυμος

  Saint Jerome was born in Stridon in Dalmatia around 347 and studied in Rome. After years of asceticism in the Syrian desert he settled in Bethlehem, where he lived in a monastery near the cave of the Nativity and produced his Latin translation of the Scriptures and many commentaries.

• Augustine of Hippo

  Hierarch, Αυγουστίνος

  Saint Augustine was born in Tagaste in North Africa in 354 to the pious Monica. After years of wandering in error he was converted through the preaching of Saint Ambrose and was baptised in Milan in 387. He became bishop of Hippo and wrote the Confessions, the City of God and many other works.

• Fortunatus, Achaicus and Stephanas the Apostles

  Apostle, Φουρτουνάτος, Αχαϊκός και Στεφανάς

  Fortunatus, Achaicus and Stephanas are mentioned by the Apostle Paul in his first letter to the Corinthians as those who came to him from Corinth and refreshed his spirit. Stephanas and his household were the first converts of Achaia. The Church numbers them among the Seventy Apostles.

• Dulas of Cilicia

  Martyr, Δουλάς

  Saint Dulas was a Christian of Praetoriada in Cilicia who was arrested during the persecution under Maximian. Tradition relates that he endured many tortures before the governor and died on the way to further punishment, receiving the crown of martyrdom.

• Savvas of Vatopedi, Fool for Christ

  Venerable, Σάββας ο Βατοπεδινός

  Saint Savvas was born in Thessaloniki in the late thirteenth century and became a monk of Vatopedi on Mount Athos. He travelled to the Holy Land and lived for many years as a fool for Christ, keeping silence for two decades, before returning to Athos.

• Jonah, Metropolitan of Moscow

  Hierarch, Ιωνάς Μητροπολίτης Μόσχας

  Saint Jonah was born near Galich and entered the monastic life at twelve. He became bishop of Ryazan and in 1448 was chosen metropolitan of Moscow, the first to be installed by the Russian bishops themselves. He was known for his defence of Orthodoxy and for miracles of healing, and reposed in 1461.
