Venerable Basil the New, anchorite near Constantinople.
St. Basil the New was an ascetic of the tenth century who lived near Constantinople. Tradition relates that he was arrested as a suspected spy and tortured, but was released and thereafter lived in the city, known for his gift of foresight and his miracles. The vision of the aerial toll-houses associated with his disciple Gregory is recorded in his life.
He reposed in peace at a great age, and his memory is kept on March 26.
