  Synaxis of the Archangel Gabriel

  Great Feast, Σύναξις Αρχαγγέλου Γαβριήλ

  On the day after the Annunciation, the Church gathers in synaxis to honor the Archangel Gabriel, the messenger of the Incarnation. It was Gabriel who announced the conception of St. John the Forerunner to Zacharias, and above all who brought the Virgin Mary the good tidings that she would bear the Saviour of the world.

• Kodratos, Theodosios and Manuel

  Martyr, Κοδράτος

  Sts. Kodratos, Theodosios and Manuel, with forty companions, were Christians of Anatolia who, according to tradition, were captured and pressed to renounce Christ. They confessed the faith steadfastly and were put to the sword.

• Twenty-Six Martyrs of Gothia

  Martyr, Μάρτυρες εν Γοτθία

  The twenty-six martyrs of Gothia were Christians of the Gothic people in the Crimea and beyond the Danube who suffered in the fourth century under the pagan king Athanaric. Tradition relates that they were burned to death in a church where they had gathered for the Liturgy, and that their relics were later brought to Cyzicus by a Gothic princess.

• Stephen of Triglia

  Venerable, Στέφανος ο Ομολογητής

  St. Stephen was abbot of the monastery of Triglia in Bithynia in the ninth century. For his defense of the holy icons under the iconoclast emperor Leo the Armenian he was imprisoned and exiled, and reposed in exile after much suffering.

• Basil the New

  Venerable, Βασίλειος ο Νέος

  St. Basil the New was an ascetic of the tenth century who lived near Constantinople. Tradition relates that he was arrested as a suspected spy and tortured, but was released and thereafter lived in the city, known for his gift of foresight and his miracles. The vision of the aerial toll-houses associated with his disciple Gregory is recorded in his life.

• George of Sofia

  Martyr, Γεώργιος ο εκ Σόφιας

  St. George was a young Christian of Sofia in Bulgaria who lived under Ottoman rule. Tradition relates that he was pressed to accept Islam and, refusing steadfastly, was burned to death in 1515.
