Father of Western monasticism.
St. Benedict was born in Nursia in Italy in the late fifth century. Leaving his studies in Rome to flee the corruption of the world, he lived first as a hermit in a cave at Subiaco, and later founded the great monastery of Monte Cassino. His Rule for monks, marked by prayer, labor, moderation, and obedience, shaped the whole monastic life of the Christian West.
Revered as the father of Western monasticism, he reposed in the sixth century and is honored throughout the Church, East and West alike. He is commemorated on March 14.
