  Benedict of Nursia

  Venerable, Βενέδικτος

  St. Benedict was born in Nursia in Italy in the late fifth century. Leaving his studies in Rome to flee the corruption of the world, he lived first as a hermit in a cave at Subiaco, and later founded the great monastery of Monte Cassino. His Rule for monks, marked by prayer, labor, moderation, and obedience, shaped the whole monastic life of the Christian West.

• Euschemon of Lampsakos

  Hierarch, Ευσχήμων

  St. Euschemon was Bishop of Lampsakos on the Hellespont in the ninth century. A friend and correspondent of St. Theodore the Studite, he suffered imprisonment and exile for his defense of the holy icons under the iconoclast emperor Theophilos.

• Alexander of Pydna

  St. Alexander was a priest of Pydna in Macedonia who suffered in the persecution of Maximian at the beginning of the fourth century. Tradition relates that he rebuked the emperor for his idolatry and was beheaded near Thessaloniki.

• Theognostos of Kiev

  St. Theognostos was a Greek by birth, sent from Constantinople in 1328 to succeed St. Peter as Metropolitan of Kiev and All Russia. He fixed his residence in Moscow, defended the Church against the demands of the Mongol khans, and built up the churches of the growing city.

• Rostislav of Kiev

  Saint, Ροστισλάβος

  St. Rostislav, baptized Michael, was Prince of Smolensk and later Great Prince of Kiev in the twelfth century. He founded the diocese of Smolensk, built churches, and was known for his justice, his love of peace among the quarreling princes, and his generosity to monasteries.
