  Nikephoros of Constantinople

  Hierarch, Νικηφόρος

  St. Nikephoros was Patriarch of Constantinople in the early ninth century, during the second wave of iconoclasm. A learned defender of the veneration of the holy icons, he stood against the emperor Leo the Armenian, and for his faithfulness he was deposed from his throne and driven into exile, where he spent his remaining years in prayer and writing until his repose.

  St. Publius was Bishop of Athens in the second century, a successor of St. Dionysios the Areopagite according to tradition. He shepherded the Church of Athens in a time of persecution and completed his witness as a martyr.

  Martyr, Αφρικανός

  Sts. Africanus, Publius and Terence were martyrs of Carthage in North Africa who suffered in the persecution of Decius in the third century. Refusing to sacrifice to idols, they were tortured and beheaded together with a number of companions.

• Christina of Persia

  St. Christina was a Christian woman of Persia who suffered for her faith in the fourth century. Tradition relates that she was scourged to death for refusing to renounce Christ.

  St. Euphrasia is a venerable woman whose name the Greek synaxaria record for March 13 with the note that she reposed in peace. Nothing further of her life has been preserved.

• Hypomone

  Holy Woman, Υπομονή

  St. Hypomone was born Helen Dragas, daughter of a Serbian prince, and became the wife of the emperor Manuel II Palaiologos and mother of the last two emperors of Byzantium, John VIII and Constantine XI. A woman of deep piety, she was the support of her family through the final years of the empire.
