Venerable Hypomone, the former Empress Helen Dragas, mother of the last emperors of Byzantium.
St. Hypomone was born Helen Dragas, daughter of a Serbian prince, and became the wife of the emperor Manuel II Palaiologos and mother of the last two emperors of Byzantium, John VIII and Constantine XI. A woman of deep piety, she was the support of her family through the final years of the empire.
After her husband's death she was tonsured a nun with the name Hypomone, meaning Patience, and lived in the monastery of Kyra Martha in Constantinople until her repose in 1450. Her memory is kept on March 13 and on May 29.
