Boyan of Bulgaria

Holy Martyr Boyan (Enravota), Prince of Bulgaria, first martyr of the Bulgarian people.

St. Boyan, called Enravota, was the eldest son of the Bulgarian khan Omurtag in the ninth century. Converted to Christ through a Byzantine captive, he was disinherited and, when he refused to renounce the faith, was beheaded on the order of his brother, the khan Malamir, around the year 833.

He is honored as the first martyr of the Bulgarian people, and his memory is kept on March 28.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Boyan of Bulgaria is commemorated on March 28. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on April 10 of the civil calendar.
