Hilarion the New

Venerable Hilarion the New, Abbot of Pelekete.

St. Hilarion the New was abbot of the monastery of Pelekete in Asia Minor during the age of iconoclasm. A man of fasting, vigil, and deep humility, he guided his brotherhood in the monastic life and stood firm in the veneration of the holy icons when the emperors sought to abolish it.

For this confession he and his monastery suffered persecution, and he is numbered among the confessors who preserved the fullness of the faith for the generations after them. He is commemorated on March 28.

June 6

St. Hilarion the New was abbot of the Dalmaton monastery in Constantinople in the ninth century. A monk of strict life and deep humility, he guided his brotherhood in the ways of prayer and obedience, and when the iconoclast emperors renewed their war on the holy icons he refused to submit, enduring imprisonment and exile for the sake of the Orthodox faith.

He is honored as a confessor, one of the monastic fathers whose steadfastness preserved the veneration of the icons until its final restoration. He is commemorated on June 6.
