Eustratios of the Kiev Caves

Holy Monk-Martyr Eustratios the Faster of the Kiev Caves, crucified for Christ.

St. Eustratios was a monk of the Kiev Caves who was taken captive by the Cumans in 1096 and sold as a slave to a Jew of Cherson. Tradition relates that his master starved his captives to force them to renounce Christ, and that Eustratios, who alone survived because of his long practice of fasting, was crucified on the day of Pascha.

His body was cast into the sea and later found by the faithful; his relics rest in the Near Caves of the Lavra. His memory is kept on March 28.

On the New Calendar, Eustratios of the Kiev Caves is commemorated on March 28. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on April 10 of the civil calendar.
