Cyril of Astrakhan

Venerable Cyril, abbot of the Trinity monastery of Astrakhan.

St. Cyril was a monk sent to Astrakhan on the lower Volga in the sixteenth century, soon after the city came under Russian rule, to establish a monastery of the Holy Trinity. Tradition relates that he was respected even by the Tatars for his humility and honesty, and that he labored for the spread of the faith in the region.

He reposed in 1576, and his memory is kept on March 18.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Cyril of Astrakhan is commemorated on March 18. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 31 of the civil calendar.
