Venerable David the Elder, ascetic and founder of the monastery that bears his name in northern Euboea.
Venerable David the Elder was a monk of the sixteenth century who, after years of ascetic struggle and travels in Greece and beyond, settled in the mountains of northern Euboea and founded the monastery of the Transfiguration, known today as the monastery of Saint David.
Tradition relates that he was renowned for his humility, his gifts of prayer and his care for the enslaved Greek population under Ottoman rule. His monastery remains a place of pilgrimage, and he is venerated as the patron of Euboea.
